Celebrating International Women's Day 2024
On March 8, we celebrate International Women's Day by acknowledging the accomplishments of Debbie Whitehead, the CEO of Clear Quality Ltd. From its humble beginnings in Rotherham, Clear Quality has grown to become a nationally recognised ISO service provider, serving over
300 businesses. In an interview, Debbie shares her journey, challenges, and proud moments as CEO.
As a woman who has led our company for seven years, what are some of the milestones and
achievements you're particularly proud of?
Over the past seven years of leading our company, I take immense pride in our journey and the significant milestones we've achieved. From starting with just one client in Rotherham to now serving over 300 businesses nationwide, we have become the go-to ISO provider. Building a team of dedicated individuals who share our vision has been a cornerstone of our success. It's gratifying to be recognised and promoted by UKAS certification bodies for our commitment to high-quality ISO services. Collaborating with prestigious companies, both nationally and globally, has further solidified our reputation. Being accepted on the ESFA ROATP framework as a unique apprenticeship provider has opened new avenues for growth and impact. Despite the challenges posed by COVID-19, we managed to navigate through without releasing any staff, showcasing our resilience. Winning the Sheffield Star Entrepreneur 2021 award was a proud moment, highlighting our dedication and hard work. Each milestone attained reflects our collective efforts and inspires us for the journey ahead.
What are some of the key challenges you've faced and overcome, and how have these
experiences shaped your approach to leadership?
Navigating through the challenges of leading our company, I've encountered various obstacles that have shaped my approach to leadership. Gender bias has been a recurring challenge, particularly in male-dominated industries like manufacturing and engineering, where I've faced barriers that required me to go above and beyond to prove my competency. Achieving a work-life balance has been another hurdle, as I initially worked long hours, sacrificing personal time to build our business in the ISO industry. However, with the support of my family and a dedicated team, I've been able to find a better equilibrium. Managing growth has presented its own set of challenges, emphasising the importance of finding individuals who align with our team's values rather than solely prioritising experience. Financial decisions, including calculated risks in investments and growth, have also been pivotal, requiring strength and vision to persevere. Moreover, the uncertainties brought by the COVID-19 pandemic tested our resilience as a business, raising doubts about our survival. Despite these challenges, each obstacle has provided valuable lessons, shaping my leadership style and reinforcing our commitment to Clear Quality's success.
How do you prioritise supporting and nurturing the talent and potential of women within
Clear Quality Ltd, especially in leadership roles?
We encourage all personnel to develop and take on new training, learning new skills that will not only support them internally to carry out their roles but to develop them for future career opportunities. Most of our team are currently in the process of doing their own apprenticeships or have completed one over the past 7 years. Mentorship and role models are important for women's career advancement.
Can you share some examples of mentorship or guidance you've provided to aspiring female leaders within
our company?
Supporting the development of aspiring female leaders within Clear Quality has been a priority, and I've implemented various initiatives to foster their growth. This includes nominating team members for business awards, celebrating their achievements and providing recognition for their hard work. Additionally, I've actively participated in women in business events alongside members of our team, providing opportunities for networking and collaboration. Encouraging involvement in networking events and industry conferences has been instrumental in helping aspiring female leaders broaden their professional networks and gain valuable insights. Moreover, I strive to cultivate a culture of open feedback within the team, where individuals feel comfortable discussing their career goals, challenges, and aspirations. Lastly, I emphasise the importance of mentorship and guidance from managers in fostering professional growth, encouraging mentors to provide constructive feedback and support to help individuals reach their full potential.
As a female-led company, what message would you like to give to other organisations about the importance of gender diversity and inclusion in business?
As a female-led company, our message to other organisations emphasises the importance of
gender diversity and inclusion in business. Embracing diversity not only fosters a more unbiased
work environment but also brings vast, experiences, and skills to the table. Recognising and
harnessing the unique strengths that individuals of all genders bring can lead to enhanced creativity, innovation, and overall business success. By championing gender diversity, organisations can cultivate a culture that reflects the diverse world we live in, promoting fairness and equal opportunities for everyone. It's not just about meeting quotas; it's about unlocking the full potential of every individual, creating a workplace
where talent flourishes and collaboration thrives. In essence, prioritising gender diversity and inclusion isn't just a social responsibility; it's a strategic imperative that contributes to a more resilient, dynamic, and prosperous business landscape
